China News Service, Beijing, May 15 (Reporter Yan Xiaohong) China National Garment Association released the economic performance of China's garment industry from January to March 2023 on January 15. In the first quarter of this year, with the further effective policies and measures to promote consumption, combined with the fading of the impact of the epidemic and other factors, China's domestic garment market changed from a decline to an increase, the market vitality continued to recover, and consumer demand gradually released.


China National Fashion Association introduced that since 2023, the international environment has become more complex and changeable, the world economic growth has slowed down significantly, and there are many unstable and uncertain factors. Under the influence of factors such as weak improvement in market demand, rising production and operating costs and intensifying market competition, the growth rate of major indicators such as production, benefit and investment of China's garment industry showed a negative growth trend in the first quarter, exerting pressure at the beginning. However, since March, the resumption of production and business in China's garment industry has been stable on the whole, the recovery of domestic market has accelerated, the industry production, revenue and other indicators have been gradually restored, and the positive factors promoting the industry to stabilize and improve have been accumulating.


In the first quarter of 2023, the production growth rate of China's garment industry continued to decline, with the industrial added value and garment output of enterprises above designated size showing negative growth.


From January to March, the total retail sales of apparel commodities by units above designated size in China reached 273.19 billion yuan, up 11.4% year on year and 19.1 percentage points higher than that in 2022. Among them, March achieved double-digit rapid growth, with a year-on-year growth rate of 24.5%, 18.1 percentage points higher than that in January and February.


In the first quarter, the proportion of garment export in eastern China continued to decline, while garment export in central and western China increased rapidly, indicating that the pace of China's central and western regions to undertake the transfer of coastal industries is accelerating. From January to March, among the central and western provinces, Xinjiang's garment export continued to maintain rapid growth, with an increase of 55.4%; Jiangxi, Hunan, Sichuan and Guangxi saw year-on-year growth of 15.0%, 53.0%, 39.8% and 187.9%, respectively.


According to the China National Garment Association, looking ahead to the whole year of 2023, the development situation of China's garment industry will become more complex and challenges such as rising costs and increasing trade risks still need to be overcome. However, based on the low base effect of the industry operation in 2022 and the strong support of unimpeded domestic large circulation, the industry's anti-risk ability and development resilience will continue to be released. The positive factors promoting the high-quality development of the industry will continue to increase, and China's garment industry is expected to gradually return to the development track of stable recovery.
