In the first six months of this year, China's clothing (including clothing accessories, the same below) accumulated exports were 76.8 billion US dollars, down 4.1% year-on-year, but Chinese clothing enterprises have stabilized the export scale by actively expanding emerging markets and creating new trade models, compared with the pre-epidemic situation. China's garment exports are still at a historically high level.

The main categories vary in warmth and cold

Since the beginning of this year, China's woven clothing exports are better than knitted clothing exports. "Woven clothing technology is relatively complex, the product added value is high, the degree of industrial transfer is lower than that of knitted clothing, and the export scale and growth rate are better than that of knitted clothing." The relevant person in charge of the garment branch of China Textile Import and Export Chamber of Commerce said.

Data show that from January to June 2023, China's woven clothing exports were 33.76 billion US dollars, a slight decrease of 0.1%; The number of exports was 6.16 billion, down 2.1% year-on-year; Export prices rose 2 per cent year on year. Knitwear exports fell 7.9% to $33.3 billion. The number of exports was 9.98 billion, down 6.3% year on year; Export prices fell 1.8 per cent from a year earlier. Exports of clothing accessories were $7.39 billion, up 2.6 percent year-on-year.

The export scale of China's chemical fiber clothing has far exceeded that of cotton clothing and maintained growth, while cotton knitted clothing and cotton woven clothing exports have declined year-on-year. Data show that from January to June 2023, China's chemical fiber knitwear exports were 16.28 billion US dollars, a slight decrease of 2.6% year-on-year; The export value of chemical fiber woven garments was 19.48 billion US dollars, up 4.2% year on year; Exports of cotton knitwear were US $12.9 billion, down 15.2% year on year; Exports of cotton woven garments were $10.59 billion, down 4.5% year-on-year.

In addition, in the first six months of this year, the export of casual suits increased by 7.6% year-on-year, the export of scarves/ties/handkerchiefs increased by 20.1% year-on-year, and the export of corsets and socks increased by 1% year-on-year. The exports of other major clothing categories fell by different margins year-on-year, among which the exports of sweaters, underwear/pajamas, sportswear and baby clothing fell significantly, down 12%, 9.1%, 9.9% and 21.9% respectively.

Emerging markets are doing well

Affected by the international trade environment, China's garment exports are undergoing structural adjustment. In the first half of this year, the export share of China's clothing to the United States, the European Union and Japan has gradually declined, and at the same time, the export performance of emerging markets such as ASEAN, South Korea, Australia, Russia and Central Asia has gradually become a new bright spot to drive export growth.

Data show that from January to June 2023, China's garment exports to the United States were 15.93 billion US dollars, down 17.9% year on year; Exports to the European Union amounted to $12.88 billion, down 18.9% year on year; Exports to Japan were $5.88 billion, down 8.7% year on year; Exports to ASEAN amounted to US $8.21 billion, up 15.6% year on year. "Asean has surpassed Japan to become China's third largest garment export market since last year, and is the only market in China's four major garment export markets to achieve positive growth, accounting for 10.7%, an increase of 1.8 percentage points year-on-year." The person in charge said.

From the perspective of major regional markets, in the first half of this year, China's garment exports to countries along the "Belt and Road" were 22.12 billion US dollars, an increase of 16.8%; Exports to RCEP member countries reached 20.66 billion U.S. dollars, up 5.5% year-on-year. Exports to the six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council in the Middle East were 2.7 billion US dollars, up 1.1% year-on-year. Exports to Latin America were $4.32 billion, down 3.3%; Exports to Africa amounted to US $4.9 billion, up 31.2% year on year; Exports to the five Central Asian countries reached 5.41 billion US dollars, a substantial increase of 37.6%, of which exports to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan increased by 199.8% and 109.2% respectively.
